What are the facts about canker sores?

First canker sores are mysterious because researchers have not found the reason why we are getting these annoying little spots in our mouth sometimes they can be found in our throat and it is unpleasant. Although, doctors stated some reasons why people get canker sores such as harsh environments, weak immune systems, by using too many chemicals, and even excessive smoking can be blamed, still no direct reason why we get this. Secondly, canker sores are small yet very painful. Third, you can’t eat the way you want because of canker sores. Fourth, it is not life-threatening, yet, there are some conditions we need to check such as:

  • You are getting canker sores often, or if it keeps on coming back,
  • If you have more than one canker sore in your mouth, although herpetiform kind of canker sores are small plenty of sores in a group (that’s a different case)
  • If you have canker sores accompanied by fever
  • if your canker sore is more than three weeks
  • if it is exaggeratedly bigger, deeper, or more painful,

If you have one of those things, you can stop enduring the pain just get up and see a doctor before the situation got worse.

Typical canker sores can heal on their own without any help from medicines or drugs or any prescriptions, but still, a possibility wherein the situation got worse might happen. In order to prevent this from happening we can try some home remedies readily available in our kitchen or in our first aid kit and even in our cabinet:

1. Eucalyptus and peppermint oil

Eucalyptus and peppermint have the same properties and characteristics both can help each other to eliminate the pain caused by a canker sore. It will help in killing the symptoms of canker sores and make our life easier. Both have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial properties that can kill viruses or bacteria that may lead to a worse situation of canker sores. Both also have the menthol effect that can help in numbing nerves which may reduce the pain caused by canker sores.

The thing you need to do:

All you need to do is prepare 2 tablespoons of olive oil, grape seed oil can also be used as an alternative, 8 to 10 drops of peppermint oil, 6-8 drops of eucalyptus oil, and a mister bottle. Now, once you have all the essential ingredients the next thing you need to do is put the grape seed or olive oil in the bottle the add eucalyptus and peppermint oil. Cap and close it tightly then shake it well. Spray it directly on the affected area. Shake it every time you’re going to use it. Repeat this remedy every time needed.

2. Swish Sage

A very common herb used widely in the kitchen and as well as for treating pains and aches, and other infections or diseases. An ulcer is one of the common ailments that can be cured with the use of sage. Sage from the mint family, we can say that sage is a cousin of eucalyptus because both have this minty effect. Anyway, sage can help in curing canker sores also known as mouth ulcers by speeding the healing process, killing off the bacteria or germs that may cause severe conditions, and relieving the pain from canker sores.

The thing you need to do:

Prepare 4-8 ounces of water and a handful of fresh sage or 2 teaspoons of dried sage. If you wish to use fresh sage, all you need to do is to put it in a bottle with 8 ounces of water. Leave it there for 24 hours. Make sure that the bottle is closed tightly. Then after that, strain the mixture, (do not throw the leaves) you can use this solution as a rinse. Leave it in your mouth for 1 minute. Then pound the leaves into a pulp and put it directly into the canker sores.

If you wish to use the dried leaves you can just bring water to a boil and add the dried leaves, let it simmer for 10 minutes. Let it cool or until it is bearably hot, swish it in your mouth for 2 minutes together with the dried leaves before rinsing with cold water.

3. Coconut oil

When it comes to treating and curing dry skin, we all know that coconut oil is the top on our list, but don’t you know that it is also very helpful in treating canker sores? Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antimicrobial, that will in treating canker sores. Not to mention it doesn’t taste so bad, so putting it in our mouth is not a bad idea.

The thing you need to do:

Prepare a cotton swab and dab it in the coconut oil, making sure that you have covered it all. Then apply it directly on the canker sore.
